- The reading begins with Mansur feeling disgusted with himself for taking part in the prostitution of a young girl. Although fate shines upon him with the new year pilgrimage and his fathers agreement. Mansur then travels to Mazar-i-Sharif through the treacherous mountain passes with a new found friend. Upon arrival the two take part in the new year festivities. The next part of the describes the struggle of the average burka against the dust and the arrival of Sharifa.
2.) The first part of the reading differs from the way the rest of the book is written, in that the section is about the the geography of Afghanistan. However, the reading still has an emphasis on the Afgani culture. The writer does let her amazement of Buzkashi shine through her usual informative and tone. For the second part of the reading the emphasis switches back to the harsh lifestyle of the Burkas.
